Galway to lose out on oil jobs

The city could be set to lose out on a massive economic windfall from the latest round of gas and oil exploration off the west coast because of the failure of the Government to put measures in place to boost Irish jobs.
SIPTU believe that the Government has failed to highlight the potential of Galway as a service centre for any rigs which may be developed on the Porcupine Basin.
A spokesman, Padraig Campbell, said yesterday that no measures had been put in place to avoid a repeat of the situation in the 1990s, when Irish oil and gas fields were serviced from a port in Scotland.
