GALWAY TO FIND OUT NEXT MONTH IF VOLVO OCEAN RACE WILL RETURN
Date Published: 15-Jan-2013
The people of Galway will find out next month if the Volvo Ocean race is returning for a third stopover.
Volvo will announce the 10 succesful ports for the 2014/2015 round the world yacht race on February 11th.
Galway is among 100 cities to register an interest, however this number has now been whittled down and talks have been taking place at potential site locations.
Volvo says its negotiations are ‘top-secret’, and cities that don’t make the cut can always apply for the next race in 2017.
The last Volvo Ocean race started in Alicante Spain in October 20-11 and finished with great fanfare in Galway last July.
The festival generated over 100 million euro for the region’s economy, however race organisers ‘Let’s do it Global’ have been left with debts of around 450 thousand euro.
Director of Communications for Volvo Jon Bramley says we’ll find out soon about the ports for the race.
