Galway to consider bid to achieve purple flag status

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Securing ‘purple flag’ status for Galway would be an accreditation that can be used to market the city and assist with efforts in a planned bid for European City of Culture.

That’s the view of City Manager Brendan McGrath whose comments followed a presentation on the initiative which aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town centres at night.

Dublin and Ennis have already achieved the accreditation as well as 40 towns and cities across the UK and Northern Ireland.

Organisers, the Association of Town and City Centre Management, say the scheme can lead to a growth in tourism, a reduction in crime and a cleaner city.

A workshop is to be held in early March (06/03) as the next step in the process.

Cllr Nuala Nolan raised concerns that lighting in the city must be improved to make the city safer while Cllr Neil McNelis said the initiative could assist in the development of Salthill at night-time.

The scheme was proposed by Cllr Donal Lyons and seconded by Cllr Collette Connolly following the presentation last evening.

Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Carmen Cronin, Manager of Purple Flag Ireland said the accreditation can help to promote Galway further and increase night time footfall.
