Galway teacher comes up with new GAA board game

A new board game that’s the brainchild of a teacher from St Annin’s in Rosscahill is set to be a big hit in households across the country this year – as families battle it out to be crowned top ‘Bainisteoir’.

Éanna Byrne, who lives in an Spidéal, is behind ‘Bainisteoir’ – a game developed with his friend and fellow GAA nut, Mayo man James Fallon.

The pair sat down in the Angler’s Rest in Headford earlier this year and hammered out the rules that will have people go head-to-head to secure enough funds to buy the best football team available to them before taking to the ‘pitch’ for a chance at All-Ireland glory.

“We worked out on paper what the game was about before testing it out on families around Spiddal and Castlebar . . . we sent it off then to have the prototype produced,” recalls Éanna of the game’s genesis.

“We then blind-tested it on a number of families and on the kids without explaining it to them and they really enjoyed it,” he says, adding that because both he and James are teachers, they had focus groups sitting right in front of them.
