The impact a deep sea fishing industry would have on the Irish speaking community of Inis Oírr needs to be assessed before any development takes place.

That’s the view of Galway West TD Eamon O’Cuív.

Bord Iascaigh Mhara have now applied for the licence, and a site around 6 kilometres off Inis Oírr is currently under investigation.

If it gets the go ahead, the proposed farm will produce around 100 million euro worth of salmon a year and create around 350 jobs.

The joint committee on communications, natural resources and agriculture met with officials of Bord Iascaigh Mhara to discuss the plans this week.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Eamon O’ Cuív called for a linguistic study on the project.
