Galway West, Fine Gael T.D, Brian Walsh, says he is prepared to lose the party whip over his stance on the proposed abortion legislation.

He has already confirmed he will not vote for the bill saying he feels surgical intervention is an inappropriate response to suicidal ideation.

However, he says he has been assured that an ‘open and frank’ debate will take place within the Fine Gael Parliamentary party on the issue.

Former Taoiseach John Bruton has also intervened in the row over abortion legislation, arguing that suicide should not be a ground for abortion.

Last night the Taoiseach appealed for calm and asked people to wait until the legislation is published before making judgment.

Speaking to Galway Bay fm News, Deputy Brian Walsh says he hopes his concerns regarding the abortion legislation will be considered.
