GALWAY TD SAYS CLOSURE OF GARDA STATIONS ATTACK ON RURAL COMMUNITY
Date Published: 06-Dec-2012
Galway East TD Micheal Kitt says the closure of ten Garda stations across Galway is an attack on the rural community.
Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan last evening made the announcement to close one hundred stations nationwide, including 9 in Galway East and 1 in Galway West.
Four of the stations – Kiltullagh, Tynagh, Kilchreest and New Inn – each have one full time Garda.
They will now be transferred to Athenry, Portumna, Craughwell and Loughrea.
The other six stations to close – Kilconly, Menlough, Kilcolgan, Leenanae, Shanaglish, Ballymoe have no permanent Guard.
Despite the closures, the Garda Commissioner says he’s confident there will be no diminution of services by the Gardai.
