Galway West TD Brian Walsh has questioned the role of the Attorney General in the government’s information campaign for the Children’s Referendum.

It follows a Supreme Court ruling last week – which found that the Government illegally used public money to put out a one-sided argument in the run up to the Children’s Referendum.

Ministers have said the Attorney General Maire Whelan advised the Government on it’s legal position prior to the publication of the information.

The issue will be discussed by Cabinet Ministers at their meeting this morning – along with the low turnout for Saturday’s referendum and the strong No vote.

However Deputy Walsh says serious questions need to be answered about the Attorney General’s role in approving the content of booklets and the website.

Minister Ruairi Quinn says he’s happy with the Attorney General – and will listen to her response.
