GALWAY TD DEFENDS TERMS OF NEW AGRI SCHEME

Galway West Fine Gael TD Sean Kyne has defended the terms set down in the new Agri-Environmental Options Scheme.

The 20 million euro scheme was reopened this week by the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney.

However the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers Association says it will not fill the gap left by REPs.

They are particularly critical of the maximum payment of four thousand euro and say while it is welcome, it is simply not enough to meet scheme targets.

Galway West Deputy Sean Kyne has defended the scheme and says it should be welcomed given the current economic conditions within which the Government is working.
