The ongoing problem of overcrowding of taxis in Galway could be alleviated soon, following a meeting involving the transport Minister this week.

Members of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport met with Minister Noel Dempsey to discuss the issue this week.

Taxi drivers in Galway and across the country have been calling on the Taxi Regulator to implement a moratorium on new licences.

They say they’re finding it impossible to make a living due to the influx of new taxis in the industry.

Galway West T.D Frank Fahey says the Minister is in favour of a proposal to only issue new licences for taxis for the disabled.
