Galway Survive Mayo Revival

ANY day Galway beats ‘the ould enemy’ is a good day… but this was special.
Beating Mayo at tiddlywinks would lift the heart, but for Galway to go down to the home of their arch rivals having not won a Connacht final in Castlebar since 1987 and to win by a point, one precious point, was magical.
You almost felt sorry for Mayo. Almost. If the tables were turned and had Mayo snatched a one-point win, we’d surely never have heard the end of it until the next ‘derby’ at least.
Galway has earned the bragging rights but we won’t gloat, it may come back to haunt us – Mayo are down but not out and if the green and red emerge from the jungle that is the qualifiers, they’ll surely relish another crack at the Tribesmen.
We’ll savour the moment, though.
