The 23-year-old Galway hurling supporter who was rescued from the Grand Canal in Dublin the night before the All-Ireland hurling final remains in a serious but stable condition at St. James’s Hospital in Dublin nearly three weeks after the accident.

From the New Inn area and a member of the Sarsfields GAA club, the man was rescued from the Grand Canal at Portobello Harbour in the early hours of September 3 last, in what Gardai are treating as a complete accident.

A couple who had been passing by at the time noticed the young man in difficulty in the water and managed to pull him to safety before he was removed by ambulance to St. James’s Hospital where he received emergency treatment.

Gardai investigating the incident are treating it as a complete accident with the man slipping into the canal after losing his way in the city. It is hoped that over the coming weeks, that the young man will be in a position to be transferred back to a hospital closer to his home.
