GALWAY SUPPORT GROUP CALLS FOR ACTION ON RISING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Date Published: 27-Nov-2012
A more co-ordinated response is needed to ensure women in Galway experiencing domestic violence can access safety when they need it.
That’s according to Cope Galway and Waterside House who assisted 600 women and children through a refuge and outreach service last year.
Figures compiled by the local support group also show that 233 women and 341 children couldn’t access refuge when they needed it and had to be referred to other centres.
Nationally, Safe Ireland figures show that more than 11-thousand women and children got help for domestic violence in Ireland last year – that’s an increase of over 50 per cent since 2007.
Wendy Huston of Cope Galway and Waterside House says a more co-ordinated approach is needed from involved agencies.
