GALWAY STUDY FINDS BIG INCREASE IN OBESE MOTHERS-TO-BE
Date Published: 06-May-2008
A Galway study has found a big increase in the number of obese mothers-to-be.
The research, led by Professor John Morrison and Dr Caoimhe Lynch of NUI Galway’s department of obstetrics and gynaecology is the first study of its kind in Ireland.
Today’s newspapers are reporting that NUIG researchers studied more than 5,000 women who had babies at University Hospital Galway between 2001 and 2003 and were shocked at the numbers of overweight women ready to give birth.
Almost 20 per cent were obese, while 6 per cent were morbidly obese, significantly higher levels compared to international studies.
