Galway students are to hold a protest outside the Starbucks outlet at NUIG later today.

It follows a recent newspaper reports which revealed that Coffee-shop chain has only paid 35,000 euro in taxes in Ireland since 2005, while paying 5.7 million in royalty and licensing fees to its parent company.

That’s according to accounts filed by the US coffee chain’s wholly-owned Irish subsidiary Ritea Ltd show.

The Galway protest is being organised by campaign group Free Education for Everyone who says the behaviour of Starbucks is unacceptable at a time when students fear further cuts and fee hikes.

The demonstration takes place outside the Bialann at NUIG at 1 this afternnon.

Sarah McCarthy of the FEE group says they aim to send a key message
