Students from four Galway schools have nine entries that in this year’s Junk Kouture regional finals. Despite the challenging year students have endured, the designs are as fascinating as ever. The contest is a real showcase for young creativity: their mission is to design an outfit from rubbish and upcycle it in as outrageous a way as they see fit.

Cookbook author and model Roz Purcell joins the judging panel alongside pop impresario Louis Walsh, American singer and broadcaster Michelle Visage and fashion designer and Junk Kouture alumnus Stephen McLaughlin.

Students from The Presentation in Athenry and Tuam, Ardscoil Mhuire Ballinasloe, Scoil Bhríde in Tuam will battle it out in the west regional finals tonight (Thursday), which will be broadcast on the Junk Kouture’s Youtube channel.

Seven designs from each region will be chosen as Junk Kouture 2021 grand finalists before an overall winner is crowned.

Each design involves incredibly intricate work and attention to detail, as outlined by Ella Rafferty, Nicole Quirke and Ciara McWalter from Scoil Bhríde Mercy Secondary School in Tuam, the team behind Spontaneous Combustion.

“Our design symbolises a person’s battle with anxious thoughts and how they can threaten to spontaneously burst into flames,” the girls reveal.

“The team wanted to bring awareness to the issue of anxiety and how often our own thoughts can make us want to physically explode. The model is engulfed in flames coming from inside herself.
