Galway students denied prospect of final triumph on the field of play
GMIT 2-13
TUS Midlands 1-10
Kevin Egan in Bekan
GMIT footballers have been awarded the Trench Cup after last Friday’s final opponents Dundalk IT failed to field in the wake of their postponement request being turned down.
Doubts surrounding the availability of several Dundalk IT inter-county players resulted in the Louth college looking for the decider to be delayed in the aftermath of their 0-7 to 0-6 semi-final win over TUS Midwest last Wednesday.
But their request fell on deaf ears and though GMIT would obviously have preferred to win the Trench Cup on the field of play, this still represents a notable achievement for the Galway college.
GMIT had to come through a tough semi-final of their own last Wednesday, even if In the early stages, there was no indication whatsoever that there were any chinks in their armour.
The wind was such that it didn’t really favour anyone and merely made life difficult for all concerned, but it was a far bigger inconvenience for the team playing away from the dressing room end of the main pitch in Bekan, and yet GMIT made light of that disadvantage in the early stages of the game.
Eoin Mannion had two attempts on goal in the first ten minutes, his first parried over the bar by goalkeeper Eoin Geraghty, but the second rattled the TUS Midlands net to establish an early four-point lead, with the Milltown player following up with another superb point to make it 1-3 to 0-1.
Finally, the Midlanders settled into the game with a couple of frees from Robbie Forde, and they got a huge shot in the arm when Jack Torpey slotted in their goal with five minutes to go before half-time, with Forde instrumental in the build-up.
