GALWAY STUDENT TO APPEAL FAILED HIGH COURT CHALLENGE
Date Published: 29-May-2012
A Galway student is one of two to appeal a High Court verdict over cuts of around 60 per cent to their support grants.
NUI Galway student Medb McCarthy is a third year Arts International student and is currently in Malta as part of her Erasmus year.
She and Dundalk IT student Robert Johnson have served notice of their intent to appeal to the Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn and the Chief State Solicitor.
Their legal challenge was defeated in April when a ruling found the grant cuts were in the public interest given the dire financial circumstances facing the country.
Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Vice President of the Union of Students in Ireland Conor Murphy says the decision was taken to appeal following consultation with a legal team.
