A third-level student from Galway who developed a prototype app to help parents keep track of their children’s vaccination records was one of the finalists in a recent competition to find the best new Apps in the health sphere.

Declan Doherty from Ballinasloe came up with an app which would allow parents to keep track of their children’s vaccinations, and this could then be used in case of any emergencies. The site would also provide vaccine updates and a schedule of vaccinations for children, as well as any travel vaccines they may need.

It would also include a section of frequently asked questions as well as the scope for a forum that would include contributions from health professionals as well as other parents and contributors.

Over 32 entries were received from four colleges. Out of these, eleven were shortlisted for inclusion in the App-cademy final in Dublin – including Declan Doherty’s.

The winner of the Best App Award, Kamil Orlowski from Dublin Institute of Technology won a cash prize of €1,000, while the winner of the Best App Case Study  Julie McDonald from  Institute of Technology Blanchardstown won a cash prize of €1,000, and an internship with Tapadoo worth €6,000 to complete and publish the app.
