Galway starting to find their groove in league campaign
Galway 1-14
Clare 0-13
Eanna O’Reilly in Kilbeacanty
GALWAY picked up their second win in the National Camogie League on Saturday in Kilbeacanty when overcoming a competitive Clare side who provided a stiff test for Cathal Murray’s charges.
The Tribeswomen were very impressive in the first half in particular, before fading somewhat on the resumption. Having gone 1-10 to 0-4 ahead early in the second period, Galway were subsequently outscored by 0-8 to 0-2 over the next 20 minutes as the Banner came right back into contention.
The home side had enough quality to steady the ship in the closing stages however, to see off the Clare challenge. With numerous players continuing to gain experience in their first year at senior level, it was another positive outing for the Tribeswomen. The only negatives on the day were injuries sustained by Niamh Hanniffy and Carrie Dolan, which forced the withdrawal of both during the game.
Playing with the aid of a slight wind, the home side made a strong start. Captain Shauna Healy sent over the first point after breaking forward from corner back. Galway’s next score saw clubmates Niamh Hanniffy and Ailish O’Reilly combine for the latter to make it 0-2 to 0-0.
Three minutes later, Rachael Hanniffy showed tremendous pace to break through the central channel and fire over a point. Clare’s Lorna McNamara opened her side’s account shortly after with a pointed free.
