Galway singer’s debut is step into new direction

Performing with top wedding bands across Ireland for several years, James Colohan has cultivated a reputation as one of Galway’s finest guitarists; from frontman to session bassist, he has experienced life on stage in many forms. But now, with the release of his debut single under the moniker Colohan, he is prioritising a project that offers him all of the advantages and responsibilities that come with total creative control.

Time to Go was released on May 14. A melodic and upbeat pop ballad, the single not only demonstrates James’ guitar and vocal abilities, but so too his ever-improving home recording skills.

Having brought out the slower, more acoustic Give Me a Minute twelve months ago, this track is full of style and confidence. He seems more certain of his act and himself.

“It’s my debut release as Colohan,” James explains.

“I released a song last year as James Colohan but I didn’t really know what I was doing. I think I kind of rushed it. It was more about being twenty-three years old with nothing out there.

“I’m proud of the song but it’s not nearly as good as this new one… Big heavy guitar songs aren’t really the current genre so I was wary of making it very in-your-face, eighties shred guitar. It’s still there but a bit more subtle.”

James recorded the song in his bedroom before passing his work on to producer Dave Skelton.

His home setup has benefitted from additional equipment in the last year or two and he has grown more comfortable with the technology, as is reflected in the songs.
