Galway sides maintain promotion pushes in the AIL

Corinthians and Galwegians both survived scares from visiting university sides to maintain their respective pushes for promotion in the Ulster Bank League.

Corinthians just edged past Dublin University (Trinity College) on a 23-22 scoreline in Division 1b of the AIL, thanks to tries from Eoghan Masterson, John Burns and Gary Warde, while captain Finn Gormley contributed eight points with the boot.

Once again, however, they failed to secure a bonus point – they are the only one of the 52 teams competing in the four division of the AIL not to secure a bonus point this season, and as a result while they have just one less win than runaway leaders Terenure, they find themselves nine points behind the Dublin side in the table.

Over in Glenina, Galwegians went into their home game with UCC in Division 2A of the AIL having won their four home games this season with bonus points, and with their Connacht Senior and Academy players back in action, they were expected to comfortably make it five from five but had to battle all the way by a dogged Cork side.

They eventually ran out 23-17 winners, with tries from Brian Murphy and Caolin Blade, and 13 points from the boot of Darragh Leader to maintain their position at the top of Division 2A.
