Galway should prove too strong for struggling Dubs

The Galway senior camogie team will look to record their third win in division 1A of the National League, when they welcome Dublin to Duggan Park, Ballinasloe on Saturday (2pm).

Cathal Murray’s side recovered impressively from a heavy opening round defeat to Tipperary to record victories over All-Ireland champions Kilkenny, and then Clare, in their last two league games.

A win over a struggling Dublin side on Saturday would put the Tribeswomen in a strong position to qualify for a league final when they travel to Cork for their final group game on March 25. Reaching a national league decider would be a significant bonus for Galway in the context of the season.

This year’s league campaign has seen the Galway management give game time to a number of young players, who have graduated to the senior ranks after a successful All-Ireland intermediate campaign last year.

Naturally, these players are still finding their feet at senior level, but their improvement with each game has been evident in the victories over Kilkenny and Clare.

The likes of goalkeeper Fiona Ryan (Ballinderreen), defender Katie Anna Porter (Davitts), midfielders Ciara Hickey (Davitts) and Jennifer Hughes (Carnmore), and forwards Shannon Corcoran (Sarsfields) and Niamh McPeake (Liam Mellows) have demonstrated their potential as future stars in the maroon jersey at senior level.

With veterans such as Sarah Dervan, Niamh Kilkenny, and Heather Cooney currently unavailable, along with injuries to the likes of Sarah Spellman, Rebecca Hennelly, and the McGrath sisters, Orlaith and Siobhán, this year’s league has been an ideal platform for developing promising young players in a competitive division 1A.
