Galway set to host Offaly as intermediates left frustrated

Counties are only allowed to field one team in this year's championships resulting in the Galway intermediates being denied the opportunity to go one step further than 2019.

THE Galway senior camogie team host Offaly on Sunday at Pearse Stadium (2pm) in round two of the All-Ireland senior championship under something of a shadow.

The Tribeswomen were very impressive in recording a 14-point victory over Wexford in round one and will look to reproduce the same level of performance against the Faithful county on Sunday.

A victory over the midlanders would set Galway up for a likely group decider against Cork in round three, with the winner topping the group and progressing to the All-Ireland semi-finals. Another good performance from the All-Ireland champions against Offaly would be ideal for the momentum of Cathal Murray’s side at this stage of the title race,

Offaly didn’t field a team against Cork in round one, after a member of their management tested positive for Covid 19. Having been in contact with a positive case, the Offaly players were not in a position to line out for that game on October 17.

However, the Offaly panel are now back in action but face a daunting test against the All-Ireland champions. The sides last met in the 2019 championship in Lusmagh when Galway ran out winners on a 3-15 to 0-6 score line. On that occasion, the Galway management chose a somewhat experimental line up and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they took a similar approach this weekend.

The players introduced from the bench against Wexford impressed in the second half and the management may wish to try out some different combinations in the starting fifteen. It should make for a interesting encounter at Pearse Stadium.

Unfortunately, the fixture will take place against a background where Galway’s intermediate team will have no further participation in their All-Ireland championship.
