Galway senators helped on Climate Bill

THE help of two Galway senators in securing amendments to the Climate Action Bill over recent weeks has been acknowledged and welcomed  by local IFA representatives.

While attempts to secure Dail amendments to the Bill had failed, two such changes – proposed by Senators Seán Kyne and Aisling Dolan – had now been accepted by the Government, Galway IFA Chairperson, Anne Mitchell said this week.

She said that the amendments would help to give full recognition for carbon removals as part of the carbon budgets and for sectoral targets.

IFA has been lobbying intensively for three amendments to the Bill but despite strong engagement, the Minister accepted no amendments in the Dáil, said Anne Mitchell.

“We then took our campaign to the Seanad.  In fairness to the FG and FF senators, amendments were put down and followed up, which have now been accepted by the Government.

“There are still serious issues with the Bill, particularly around the ‘distinct characteristics’ of biogenic methane, along with the need to avoid any international carbon leakage arising from the implementation of the Bill,” said Anne Mitchell.

She also told the Farming Tribune that there were continuing to be ongoing concerns about the impact of the so-called eco-schemes on the incomes of small farmers across the West of Ireland.
