Galway senator speaks out against rural transport changes

Galway bay fm newsroom – Galway West Senator Trevor O’Clochartaigh has spoken out against the decision to merge the three rural transport schemes in Galway.

Public Transport Minister, Alan Kelly, announced major changes to the Rural Transport Scheme at an event in Oranmore yesterday. (9/7)

The Rural Transport Programme is a Government programme to meet the transport needs of people living in rural areas.

There are currently three schemes in Galway, Bealach in Connemara and West Galway, Galway Rural Development Company runs the North East Galway Scheme and South East Galway Integrated Rural Develoment Limited.

Under new plans, Galway’s rural transport scheme will be run by a single Transport Co-ordination Unit, working closely with the local authorities.

Senator O’Clochartaigh has described the merge as a backward step
