GALWAY SENATOR CALLS FOR REVIEW OF FARM SLURRY PRACTICES
Date Published: 01-Oct-2012
A Galway senator is calling for an urgent review of slurry practices to improve farm safety.
Labour Senator Lorraine Higgins says a review is essential following recent tragic events in Northern Ireland which led to the deaths of 3 members of the Spence family.
Noel Spence, 52, his sons, Graham, 30, and Ulster rugby star Nevin, 22, fell into a slurry tank at their home near Hillsborough and were overcome by fumes.
Senator Higgins says the current reliance on wind and other factors for safety is an archaic discipline and not suitable for modern day farming.
She is calling for an urgent review to tackle exisiting risk factors.
