EXPERIENCE spoke volumes as Galway Golf Club captured the Senior Cup title for only the second time in their history with a hard earned victory in the end as they saw off the a youthful West Waterford side in the final.

And it made up for a number of disappointments in recent years as Damien Coyne captured the all important victory on the 18th green to see Galway over the line in an encounter that proved tighter than was anticipated.

Earlier in the match Damien Glynn, who proved the hero in the semi-final with a crucial victory on the 19th hole, romped to a 6/4 victory while the other point was secured in grinding fashion by Joe Lyons on the 17th.

Eddie McCormack, who saw a three hole lead whittled away, was down the 19th while Coyne tidied things up on the 18th against the youngest player in the match and could even afford the luxury of a bogey as his opponent was in trouble off the tee and again with his third shot.

It sparked major celebrations at the splendid Tullamore Golf Club where this year’s Bulmers Cups and Shields finals were held and marks just the second time in Galway’s history to have won the coveted Senior Cup.

The previous success came in 2006 in Enniscrone when three of the current players – Lyons, McCormack and David Scully – were members of that history making side and again they formed the backbone to this success.
