An investigation by European copyright agencies is under way into a suspected Galway-run website which sells counterfeit ebooks.

The Sunday Times is reporting investigators believe library dot n-u is operated by Irish nationals, possibly from Galway.

The website, which may be run through a server in Kiev, the Ukranian capital, gives the former headquarters of Anglo Irish Bank in Dublin as its registered office.

It specialises in offering expensive academic and educational titles to about 30,000 users to download illegally each month.

The website operators believed to be in Galway, appear to know they’re the focus of an inquiry – last week library.nu changed its front page and now lets only existing users log in and download counterfeit books.

The Irish Copyright Licencing Agency is calling on the government to introduce measures to disconnect internet users who illegally download copyrighted material.

The illegal trade in downloads is depriving publishers of millions of euro.
