Galway restaurants retain Michelin Stars to keep city on gastronomy map
Galway City’s two Michelin Star restaurants have retained their status in the latest guide. Aniar on Dominick Street, where the head chef is JP McMahon, and Loam on Fairgreen Road, owned by chef Enda McEvoy, both retained their one Michelin Stars.
The Michelin guide is the ‘bible’ of top restaurants in Ireland and Great Britain, and the awarding of a star or stars is coveted. Its latest list was released on February 16.
Galway’s two Michelin restaurants being awarded the prestigious rating keeps the city on the map as a gastronomy destination for food tourism.
Loam also received a Green Michelin star for its sustainability.
The guide said that Mr McEvoy was “one of the first chefs to embrace the sustainability ethos and he continues to make green strides to this day.”
“Every ingredient is 100% Irish and sourced from local farmers and fishermen, with whom the chef has developed strong relationships, and the kitchen takes a nose-to-tail and leaf-to-root approach to this highly seasonal produce,” it said.
The dishes in Loam’s set tasting menu were described as “creative, modern and well-balanced with a lightness of touch and a well-judged simplicity that lets the natural flavours shine through”.
Michelin said: “With its concrete walls and stark metal ceiling, the restaurant has a spartan, industrial feel, but the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, thanks to the natural charm of the chatty team.”
