There’s been up to a 50 percent increase in demand for ‘recent assault’ consultations at Galway Rape Crisis Centre.

The centre is one of 15 nationwide that is calling on the government to protect the area from further cuts.

It comes as figures compiled by the city based Rape Crisis Network Ireland show that over 2 thousand 500 people took up counselling and support with centres nationwide last year.

The Galway Rape Crisis Centre which is based in Claddagh is to move to a larger premises in Forster Court in the coming weeks to accommodate the rise in the demand for services.

The new facility will be three times the size with an additional 8 counselling rooms.
