Galway raise the standard again in sweeping to league title glory

THE Galway camogie team is continuing to raise the bar. Cathal Murray’s charges are the current top dogs in the game and judging by the quality and resilience shown in their league final triumph over Cork at Croke Park on Saturday evening, they are no mood to be shifted from this lofty perch.

It’s an inherent quality of champions not to panic when the opposition get a run on them and the Tribesmen again displayed that inner belief when rallying superbly from an early second half crisis to land their second league title in the space of four years. By the end, you’d never have known that the All-Ireland champions had trailed by six points soon after half time.

A youthful Cork team – with the ubiquitous Davy Fitzgerald in tow – were carrying the fight to the Tribeswomen. Aishling Thompson reeled off three points from her midfield base, with outstanding wing back Saoirse McCarthy repeatedly catching the eye. They led by 0-10 to 0-7 at the break and when Amy O’Connor smartly finished to the net in their first attack of the second half, Galway appeared in big trouble.

Having captured two All-Ireland titles over the past three years and with little to prove, Galway might have been forgiven if they had accepted their fate knowing the championship is what really counts, but that’s not the attitude that has taken the women in maroon to the top of the camogie tree. They simply rolled up their sleeves, with their comeback aided by a critical influence from the bench.
