Galway pupils claim Career Skills prizes

Galway students were to the fore when the winners of the 2017 National Careers Skills competition were recently announced in Dublin.

Eabha Ní Fhlaithearta from Coláiste Einde, Salthill, received first prize for her Career Investigation into Beauty Therapy in the LCE / LCA / LCVP Category; Claire McGill from Presentation College, Tuam, received second prize for her Career Investigation in Journalism in the Transition Year category, and Hazel Ní Bhríon, Coláiste an Eachréidh, Athenry received third prize for her Career Investigation in Politics in the Irish Category.

In addition, Rhiannon Mulcaire from St. Paul’s Secondary School, Oughterard was highly commended for her Career Investigation into a solicitor in the Transition Year Category.

Clíodhna Ní Niaidh from Coláiste na bPiarsach, Ros Muc, was highly commended for her Career Investigation in Science Lecturing and Research in the Irish Category.

Kiara Ní Dhúgáin from Coláiste Cholmcille, Indreabhán, was commended for her work experience in teaching in the Irish category – as was her fellow Coláiste Cholmcille pupil Orlaith Ní Shé for her work experience as a surgeon in the same category.

The National Career Skill Awards, run by www.careersportal.ie and sponsored by McDonald’s Ireland, recognise students who complete career investigations into their chosen area of interest following their work experience placement.

The competition seeks to promote an awareness around the importance of Career Skills and how they can help students to prepare for the world of work.

Each student must demonstrate their understanding of a chosen career, the educational pathways that lead to it, the most relevant knowledge requirements and the most important transferable skills needed to be successful.
