Farmers and locals across the county may turn their backs on the Government’s presidential candidates.

That’s if a proposed septic tank charge is introduced, according to County Councillor Jim Cuddy.

Plans are being put in place to charge rural households for tank inspections as part of an EU directive on ground water quality.

Ireland will be heavily fined if the legislation isn’t put in place soon.

It’s already been met with huge opposition at public meetings in Oughterard and Kilconnell.
