GALWAY PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE THIRD IN LATEST POLL
Date Published: 20-Jul-2011
Galway’s presidential hopeful is trailing behind two other candidates in the race for the Aras.
An Irish Times MRBI poll shows Labour’s Michael D Higgins in third place.
The controversial vote to turn down a request from Senator David Norris to address Galway City Council hasn’t hampered his chances for the presidency.
When people were asked who they’d vote for if the election were tomorrow – he was on 25 per cent
The poll shows Fine Gael candidate Gay Mitchell in second place – with Labour’s Michael D Higgins a close third.
Independent Sean Gallagher was at 13 per cent and Mary Davis was at 12 per cent.
Fianna Fáil have yet to decide whether they’ll be putting a candidate forward.
Speculation is rife that if the party does enter the race, Galway West TD Eamon O’Cuiv will run under its banner.
However, the poll doesn’t bode well for the former Minister – he only drew 11 percent of the vote.
