GALWAY PHD STUDENT SUCCESSFULLY APPEALS SEVERITY OF SENTENCE
Date Published: 10-Jul-2008
A PhD student was successful this week in his appeal against the severity of a four-month prison sentence imposed on him last year for being abusive and insulting to a Garda at a rave party and for resisting arrest.
Passing sentence initially in Galway District Court, Judge Mary Fahy said, 26 year old Gerald Glynn of 24 Beechcourt, Grattan Road, had shown no remorse for his belittling attitude towards Garda Peter McGuinness.
Glynn appealed the sentences the following month to the Circuit Criminal Court.
Judge Raymond Groarke decided to adjourn the matter for one year to see if Glynn behaved himself in the meantime.
State solicitor, William Kennedy told the Circuit Court hearing this week that Glynn had not come to the attention of the Gardai in the interim.
He suspended the sentences imposed in the District Court and bound Glynn to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for two years.
