Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway peace activist due to start a prison sentence tomorrow (Fri 1st) has written to the Minister for Justice demanding political status.
Niall Farrell of the Galway Alliance Against War was arrested alongside Margaretta D’Arcy last September after holding a protest on the runway at Shannon Airport.
In a letter sent to Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald, Mr. Farrell says that the Irish state is attempting to criminalise what he says were ‘peaceful protest actions’.
He will surrender himself to Gardai to following a peace event at Eyre Square tomorrow at 1pm.
Mr Farrell says that if he is not treated as a political prisoner, he will not conform during his two week sentence.
