Two Galway PD Councillors have resigned from the Progressive Democrats over the removal of automatic medical cards from the over 70s.

City councillor Terry O’Flaherty and County councillor Thomas Welby announced their resignation to party leader and Galway Senator Ciaran Cannon within the past few hours.

Cllr Welby is also calling for the immediate resignation of party colleague and Health Minister Mary Harney for her role in what he describes as a draconian measure.

Both councillors say they will remain on their respective councils as independent representatives.
