Galway outfit are breath of fresh air Behind the Mask
Groove Tube with Cian O’Connell
Galway six-piece Electric Dreams have announced themselves to the world with the launch of a vibrant debut album. Behind the Mask comprises of six upbeat tracks, toeing the line between dreampop and R&B. It is a sound fuelled by jazzy guitar licks, summery vocal hooks and smooth drumbeats. The instrumentation is further boosted by keys and synth – all of which combines for a broad, layered sound.
It is an eclectic mix of styles but the end product is smooth and cohesive. Every member plays their role on this album and everyone is given space to have their own creative impact.
The group consists of Elizabeth McCormack on vocals, Karen Breen on keys, Tiago DaSilva on drum pads, Martin McDonagh on guitar, Andrew Madec on bass & vocals and Aengus Hackett on guitar & vocals.
“Everyone has their strengths and we have developed an effective way of working together as a band,” he notes.
“For example, Karen is amazing at coming up with melodies – the music just pours out of her! So, she usually comes up with the main hooks and melodic ideas and myself or Andrew just to try latch on to some of the incredible ideas as they flow out.
“Martin is the man when it comes to writing lyrics; his ideas are fantastic. Tiago is the most solid drummer you could ask for and Elizabeth is just an incredible singer who gives the songs the expression they need.”
Electric Dreams’ diverse line-up includes musicians with intellectual disabilities. The band’s project has been supported by That’s Life, the award-winning arts programme of the Brothers of Charity Services, Galway.
That’s Life offers people with intellectual disabilities opportunities to discover and realise their artistic potential, through working with established artists and participating in high-quality arts programmes.
