GALWAY will try to create an upset of sorts when they face reigning All Ireland champions Meath on Saturday in the TG4 All Ireland Ladies Football quarter-final at O’Connor Park, Tullamore  (throw in 7.15pm).

Maghnus Breathnach and Fiona Wynne’s side face their biggest game of the year to date as they try to dethrone a Meath outfit which lost the Leinster final to Dublin while they also had to come from behind to secure a draw against Armagh in the group stages.Add New

Galway have come so close so often to ending their long wait for an All Ireland title. However, in one of the GAA stories of last year, Meath managed to surprise everyone by ascending the steps of the Hogan Stand, defeating traditional powerhouses Cork and Dublin along the way.

Breathnach knows that how Galway fare on Saturday evening will determine the success of their year as they seek to move on step closer towards replicating Meath’s achievements.

“The league and everything is grand but championship football is what you’re judged on. We are in the final eight. We want to be in the final four but we have a massive challenge in front of us.”

“They have done what Galway want to do. They have All Ireland medals in their back pocket. We have to stand up and put a serious effort in. The girls are gearing up nicely so we will go in all guns blazing.”
