RISING star Aaron Niland fired over 16 points as Galway secured an emphatic win in their first outing of this year’s All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship.

The Clarinbridge sharpshooter, brother of senior hurler Evan Niland, produced a masterful display on Saturday afternoon as Galway swatted aside the challenge of a disappointing Clare side.

With Joe Canning part of the Galway minor backroom team, he will no doubt be impressed by the mercurial Niland, who simply proved too much for an overworked Clare defence to handle.

Captain Rory Burke also starred up front with four points from play, with the supporting cast of Conor Dolphin, Orin Burke, Conor Lawless and Ryan O’Donnell playing their part.

Clare were well below par as they showed little resistance on a day when they shot only nine points and 15 wides. The Galway defence were on top throughout and with full back Ben O’Donovan doing a fine man marking job on Oisin Whelan, who entered the game as Clare’s top scorer with 2-39 over five games, the Banner boys looked short of ideas.
