Galway maternity units staffing levels fall short of recommended standard
Galway Bay fm newsroom – There is a shortage of 32 midwives at UHG and a further 16 at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.
The figures are revealed in a a survey led by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation which finds that no maternity unit has the internationally recommended midwife to birth ratio.
The report examines the 19 maternity units nationwide.
It finds that there is one midwife at UHG to every 41 births and one at Portiuncula maternity unit to every 38 births.
The internationally recommended ratio is for one midwife for every 29.5 births.
