Galway look to hold all the aces for big battle in Cork

THE Galway senior camogie team will be going in as big favourites against Tipperary in the All-Ireland semi-final in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday (2.15pm).

That mantle is the product of an impressive championship campaign so far in defence of their All-Ireland title, with their latest victory over Cork in Salthill reflecting the hunger in the side.

Galway overcame a serious test from the Rebels, when their desire to keep their winning championship run going was put under major scrutiny. Cathal Murray’s side came through that challenge impressively to earn their place in Saturday’s semi-final in Cork.

Galway are looking to qualify for a second All-Ireland final in a row for the first time since 2011. They have never won back to back All-Ireland titles at senior level and the prospect of such an historic achievement appears to be driving the Galway team of 2020.

With three wins from three championship matches, the Tribeswomen have momentum behind them coming into Saturday’s All-Ireland semi-final. They have put up a very healthy combined score of 8-45 against Wexford, Offaly and Cork respectively, with Galway likely to line out with the same fifteen which started against Cork in Pearse Stadium.

2013 All-Ireland winning captain Lorraine Ryan remains on the injured list with an Achilles tendon injury. The Galway management are unlikely to change a winning side, but one player who may break into the team is Caitríona Cormican, who had a tremendous second half against Cork. The strength of the Galway panel gives Murray and the management plenty of options to consider ahead of the game.

Tipperary come into Saturday’s showdown on the back of an impressive quarter-final victory over Waterford. Bill Mullaney’s side outplayed the Déise for the majority of the match and effectively shut down some of Waterford’s key players, such as Beth Carton and Lorraine Bray.
