ONE man was rescued by the Galway RNLI Lifeboat when his 25 foot sailboat almost hit rocks off Barna in Galway Bay, this morning (Sunday 9 June).

The alarm was raised by a member of the public who spotted the boat veering dangerously towards rocks south east of Barna Pier just before 11am.

He contacted the Irish Coastguard who sought the assistance of Galway RNLI Lifeboat.

The Lifeboat arrived at the scene at 11.14 and towed the sail boat out of difficulty. There was one person on board.

Galway Lifeboat Operations Manager Mike Swan says with so many people on the water in this good weather, it’s important that people be aware of the dangers in their local area.

The Lifeboat crew on this callout were Helmsman Declan Killilea, David Oliver, David Badger and Martin Olvier.

The weather conditions at the time of today’s rescue in Galway Bay were flat and calm.
