WITH no Gaelic games action at present, Galway LGFA Chairperson Betty Hernon encourages clubs to take stock and reflect on what they can do better to improve standards on and off the field.

Hernon says that this is what the County Board has endeavoured to do since the turn of the year, with their new website one of the improvements they’ve made.

“It is also an ideal time for clubs now to reflect, and take a bit of time out and say, ‘okay, we are not going to be meeting out on the pitches for a while, but, maybe, there is something else we can look at. Then, pick two or three things that they would like to enhance or would like to improve within your their club set-up,” she says.

“I think clubs need to do that and we have certainly done it at county level. Paul (Walsh) and Kevin (Mac Donnacha), for example, put huge work into development and introducing the strength and conditioning online for players.

“They are doing great work and this was just taking that time to reflect to see how we were going to progress with development in the county. So, I think it is ideal for clubs to use this time to get together and see how they can make things better.”

In addition to reviewing player development, Galway LGFA launched their own website last week. Hernon is full of praise for Assistant Treasurer Ann Galvin Murray, who took charge of the venture.

“It is a huge addition and I can only commend Ann and the amount of work she put into it,” says Hernon. “Going forward, it will be fantastic from the point of view of results and fixtures and keeping everyone posted and up-to-date. It will really help to increase the profile of ladies football, not just at county level, but at club level as well.”

Next on the agenda for Galway LGFA will be finance and fundraising and, as with every other board and organisation in every sport, Hernon recognises there are great challenges ahead. “The fundraising side of it is that little bit more challenging. It is very difficult to approach sponsors because what is the year going to look like?
