Galway League fail to deliver
Date Published: 24-Jan-2008
WHEN put to the test for the first time this season Galway’s Oscar Traynor challenge faltered as they suffered defeat at a wet Terryland Park on Saturday evening.
Having been reduced to ten men following the dismissal of central defender Emmett Byrne for a professional foul on 34 minutes, they were punished further when the visitors’ Charlie McCormick converted from the spot.
From there on it was an uphill battle and despite enjoying the majority of possession, there was little sign of any penetration in attack.
And it is here that questions must be asked about where have all the strikers gone? Stephen Lally’s squad of 17 included just one out and out frontman in David Goldbey.
True, Galway possess a number of versatile players who could cover both midfield and attack, but the outcome of the 5-4-1 line up was
that the Inishowen central defenders Martin Farren and Dermot Diver cleaned up everything that dropped in the area. As a result, the home
side went for long spells without ever looking like scoring.
