GALWAY ladies footballers, the 2019 runners-up, got off to an unwanted start in the first round of Division 1 as they were shocked by newly promoted Waterford in Corofin on Sunday.

The second half was only 30 seconds old and Galway found themselves nine points down as the Déise found the net for a fifth time. Aoife Murray’s goal came after Galway ‘keeper Dearbhla Gower denied her sister, Katie, from completing a hat-trick. Her effort meant that all three of the Murray triplets had all scored a goal each.

Despite this deficit, Galway battled back gallantly as they rattled off seven unanswered points in the final quarter. Five of them came from the boot of Tracey Leonard, while Andrea Trill and Olivia Divilly also got on the scoresheet to put the Tribeswomen within a single-point of the visitors as the tie approached injury-time.

However, referee Garryowen Mahon added-on just one minute of injury-time, so Waterford knew retaining possession would help win out the day. Goalkeeper Rosie Landers smartly tapped her kick-out short to her full-back Róisín Dunphy, and Mahon blew the full-time whistle to cap-off a memorable afternoon for the Déise.

For Galway, they would have been expected to win this match-up, even without the Ward sisters; Nicola and Louise (both knee injuries), Mairéad Seoighe (playing AFLW with North Melbourne) and Sinéad Burke (sitting out the early rounds).
