Galway ladies keen to topple title holders

MERVUE United will make their own piece of history tonight when they host Athlone Town in Terryland Park in their first-ever game in the League of Ireland (kick-off 7.45pm), but manager Johnny Glynn wants his squad to ignore the occasion and concentrate on getting off to a good start to their debut season in the League.
When a group of 10 residents gathered in Mervue 49 years ago with the aim of establishing a soccer club for the locality, little did they think that just under half a century later the club would be represented at the highest level in the domestic game, and while Glynn wants his players to be cognisant of that fact, he says the celebrations for his squad can start only after the game.
ÒI suppose there is a small bit of danger that the occasion will get to the players, but we have to make sure that is not the case, and in fairness to them, their focus has been very good this week.
ÒIt is an important game for everyone involved with the club, and we want to ensure we get off to a decent start. We are not looking to start in a whirlwind fashion, there are 33 games in the season and we will improve as the season goes on, we just need to be patient and enjoy playing at this level,Ó Glynn said.
