Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway’s island community has called on the Agriculture Minister to put meaningful top-ups in place for schemes targetted at off-shore island farms.
It follows a meeting of the Irish Farmers Association in the Clayton Hotel in the city today, where representatives from Aran and Inishbofin highlighted their concerns.
The farming body says payment rates in schemes such as GLAS and the former Disadvantages Areas scheme should be increased.
IFA Islands spokesperson Flor McCarthy says the cost of production in some island farms is up to 40% higher than those located on the mainland.
He says this has a significant impact on farm profitability and must be addressed.
