The first tranche of flood relief funding for County Galway – totaling almost €800,000 – has been announced by the Government.
Welcoming the details of the funding, Independent Galway West Deputy Noel Grealish said the Office of Public Works (OPW) can now begin work on flood prevention measures.
“This allocation of funding is the first phase to be announced by the Minister and further phases will be announced later.
“This phase, totalling €773,450, is welcome news for residents of the areas that flooded last November, and it means that the OPW can commence flood prevention measures in the coming weeks.
“I will be working closely with the Minister to ensure that adequate funding is allocated for other flood stricken areas as soon as possible,” said Deputy Grealish.
Fianna Fáil Deputy Noel Treacy said that Dr. Martin Manseragh, the Minister with responsibility for the OPW, had informed him that a total of €6.7 million was being allocated this year for flood relief works, compared to €2.1 million last year.
Deputy Treacy said that Galway County Council could now proceed with approved measures to reduce the risk of future flooding throughout East Galway and that further applications could be made under the scheme.
